reaking the Silence: A Play on Caste, Identity, and Injustice
This play is a powerful exploration of oppression and injustice—with a particular focus on the enduring presence of the caste system, both in Sri Lanka and within the Norwegian-Tamil community.
Nearly three decades ago, Tamil families fled the horrors of war and displacement in Sri Lanka and began a new life in Norway. Today, Norwegian Tamils are a vibrant minority, contributing to society across all sectors. Yet, even in this new land, some deep-rooted traditions have followed—one of the most persistent and least discussed being the caste system.
While caste may seem like a relic of the past, it remains a taboo subject, hidden in plain sight. It influences who people befriend, who they marry, what communities they belong to—and it is not only the older generation who maintain these practices. Disturbingly, we see younger Norwegian-born Tamils, raised in an egalitarian society, also internalizing caste-based prejudices—pressured by families, religious institutions, and social expectations.
This play confronts this reality head-on. It seeks not to shame, but to reveal, reflect, and provoke dialogue. Through personal stories and powerful symbolism, it asks: What happens when identity is limited by hierarchy? When community becomes a gatekeeper instead of a sanctuary?
At the heart of this production is Parai Attam, one of the oldest and most rhythmic expressions of Tamil identity. Traditionally a drum and dance form of resistance, Parai has long been associated with the so-called "lowest" castes—its sound often silenced, its performers marginalized. But in this play, Parai becomes a voice—a heartbeat of protest and pride.
Our motivation for creating this work was rooted in urgency. This is not just a cultural or historical issue—it is a human issue. By shedding light on caste discrimination in our own backyard, we hope to challenge silence, foster empathy, and inspire change.
Let this performance be a beginning. A space to ask hard questions. A moment to listen. A step toward justice.

பல்வேறு வடிவங்களிலான ஒடுக்குமுறைகளுக்கு மனித சமுதாயம் முகம் கொடுத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது.
ஒடுக்குவோர் அதிகார மையங்களாகவும்- ஒடுக்கப்படுவோர் உரிமைக்காகவும் சமூக நீதிக்கானதுமான குரலை எழுப்புபவர்களாகவும் இருக்கின்றனர். நீதிக்கும் அநீதிக்குமிடையிலான போராட்டம் ஆங்காங்கே நிகழ்ந்துகொண்டே இருக்கிறது.
அநீதிகள் தலையெடுக்கும் போதெல்லாம்..அறத்திற்கான குரல் எழுந்து எதிர்த்துக் கொண்டே இருக்குமென்பது இருப்பியல் நியதி.
இன ரீதியான, மத ரீதியான, கல்வி-பொருளாதார ரீதியான வர்க்க மற்றும் சாதி ரீதியான ஒடுக்குமுறைகள், சமூக ஒடுக்குமுறை என ஒட்டுமொத்த உலக மானிட சமுதாயம் எதிர்நோக்கும் ஒடுக்குமுறைகளைக் குறியீடாக்கி இந்தக் கலைப்படைப்பில் பேச விழைந்துள்ளோம்!
தமிழ்ச் சூழலில் பேசாப்பொருளாக மூடிமறைத்துப் பேணப்படும் சாதிய ரீதியிலான ஒடுக்குமுறையும்- சமூக ஏற்றத்தாழ்வு சார்ந்த அநீதிகள் சிலவும் இதில் தொட்டுச் செல்லப்படுகின்றதெனினும், இந்த நடன அரங்கம் - உலகளாவிய சமூக அநீதிகளுக்கு எதிரான அம்சங்கள் பலவற்றைப் பிரதிபலிக்கின்றது. குறியீடாகவே பல விடயங்களைச் சுட்டிநிற்கின்றது.
அன்பும் வாழ்வியல் அறமும் தான் மானிட சமத்துவத்தின் அடிநாதம் என்பதையும சொல்லவிழைகின்றது!!
பறை என்பது – மனிதத்தின் குரலாக-அநீதிகளுக்கு எதிரான குறியீட்டு வடிவமாக இங்கு எடுத்துக்கொள்ளப்படுகிறது!!
